If you have recently been told that you require a root canal, don’t worry. This procedure has a reputation for being very painful, but it really is not. We are always concerned with your comfort. We will explain how root canal treatment works and make you feel comfortable.
This procedure is usually not more painful than a filling. The actual pain is generally caused by the infection that precedes the treatment. You’ve just been told that the only solution for the pain in your tooth is the dreaded Root Canal. Don’t panic. We will explain the procedure and make your comfort throughout the treatment a priority.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?
A root canal treatment is used to repair a decayed tooth. Typically, such a tooth is infected by the time this procedure is performed. The treatment can actually save a tooth that would otherwise be lost.
The procedure is often referred to as a “root canal.” However, that is actually the term for an area in the root.
During this procedure, the dentist removes the pulp and the nerve. The interior of the tooth is cleaned out, and it is then sealed. Without this treatment, the tissue around the tooth becomes infected. Painful abscesses can also manifest.
Some indications of the need for root canal treatment may be:
Infected/Inflamed Pulp Tissue
The natural cavity in the middle of a tooth is called the root canal. Inside that cavity is a soft area known as the pulp chamber. Within the root canal is also the nerve. Sometimes, the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected. If the problem is not treated, it can lead to a very serious infection.
If the pulp is not eradicated from the root canal, the potential for abscess is great. When you have an abscessed tooth, the swelling can spread. It may even extend to other parts of your face. Your neck and head can become swollen, too.
This kind of infection can cause bone loss at the tip of the root. Additionally, a hole may form in the side of the tooth. If that happens, infectious fluid can start draining into the gums and cheek.
Dentists refer to the root canal procedure as a pulpectomy. The purpose of this treatment is to cure the infected root canal. Many years ago, a tooth with a damaged core was typically extracted.
Today, a pulpectomy can be used to disinfect the tooth. The dentist then fills the interior of the tooth. This prevents further pain, and it minimizes the occurrence of additional damage.
HOW ROOT CANAL TREATMENT WORKS
First, the tooth is anesthetized, so you will not need to worry about pain. Then, your dentist creates a hole in the pulp. Our dentist relies on tiny precision instruments to extract the pulp.
As the pulp is being extracted from the tooth, the tooth canal is disinfected. After it is disinfected, the tooth is filled with a material that prevents more infection.
